The latest offering in The Blackthorn Series, Blood Dark by Lindsay J. Pryor is finally out. The fifth installment continues with the story of Kane Malloy and Caitlin Parish, introduced in the first book, Blood Shadows.I’ve been waiting for the release of Blood Dark for months and most definitely was interested in how the storylines from the previous books would merge with one another. Now, if you’ve not read the series, might I suggest you pick up the first four books, Blood Shadows, Blood Roses, Blood Torn and Blood Deep and read them in order. It will be a fruitful exercise and you’ll come to love this versatile series complete with vampires, lycans, witches, angels and other creatures, creating a paranormal alter-world that is well thought out and entertaining for those who love this genre.
The storylines from each of the books do build on each other and having the background will put Blood Dark in perspective. There are many moving parts and the convergence of these sub-plots is built around a prophecy that is the nucleus putting the whole together.
Let’s talk about the dynamics between Kane and Caitlin. My favorite couple, these two have a love story born out of sheer hatred and deception. Somehow, through all the bad, they formed a bond and it is obvious neither is complete without the other. But trust is a major point of contention between these two and more often than not, I wanted to throw my phone (yes, I read on my phone using my beloved Kindle app) against the wall because despite Caitlin’s faith in Kane, his reluctance to reciprocate was nearly maddening.
Their chemistry is palpable and the anger and mistrust between them cannot contain their feelings for each other. I couldn’t imagine Kane ever letting Caitlin go because despite his own uncertainty about why she returns to her job as a VCU agent, he loves her.
Ah yes, the point of contention, returning to her job and being responsible for hunting Kane creates a chasm between the lovers. Caitlin has drawn sides, at least in Kane’s mind and well, all I can say is, he is a fool. Caitlin has her own insecurities about Kane’s secrets but her faith in him always prevails.
The main players in Blackthorn, Caleb Dehain and Jask Tao make solid appearances and are critical to the prophecy and the survival of Blackthorn. Kane’s nemesis, Sirius Throme delivers blow after blow to the lovers who try to stay a step ahead of his plot to destroy them. Blood Dark is action-packed, thrilling and a great love story all in one.
Pryor is a solid storyteller. Her writing is well composed and fluid. Blood Dark is complex with a number of sub-plots that intertwine beautifully. Using strong internal and external conflict coupled with a good dose of mystery, Pryor keeps the momentum building.
Overall, I am pleased with Blood Dark. An avid reader of paranormal / gothic romance, Pryor is a favorite. If you haven’t had the chance to pick up this series, I encourage you to do so.

Like many others I love this author. I have followed her from her very first book and I remember only too well the angst in waiting for the next book to arrive. I no longer have that reaction. I am in no hurry to have the next book and in fact feel better knowing it may be a while in coming. You see the books are that good. They stay with you long after you have turned the last page and waiting for them to arrive is a tease we can live with when it means it prolongs the enjoyment when it (the next one in this incredible series) finally comes. If you have doubts about this then ask Kane as he is the master at prolonging things.
However once the book gets here then it does get a little more difficult to control reactions (you can ask Kane this as well). When Blood Dark started downloading on my I approached the reading calmly, slowly. Well, the slowly part is true, the calmly not so much. It is impossible not to feel a thousand emotions running riot as the story unfolds. Caitlin starts our hearts beating and Kane makes them stop and the emotional roller coaster ride means the reading slowly goes out the window along with the washing, cleaning and cooking. All this happens and there is also a clever plot and a most captivating host of other characters we have met and no doubt will continue to meet as the drama unfolds.
Lindsay has the power to create characters so enthralling and her writing is so intense and so rich in description and actions that the superb world-building becomes your world. This world is so real that the thought the experience might end too soon is very difficult to accept. You slow down the reading yet you still find yourself racing to finish things so you can get back to the book anyway. It is a losing battle because you discover the wait for this one has been worth every written word the author has slaved and stressed over.
Our heartstrings are pulled taut as we follow and savour the twisting and often dark corners called pages. They beckon the reader with power, greed, and love, deep abiding and engrossing love expressed in beautifully expressed physical actions that defy hot. Kane and Caitlin are an addiction that holds us prisoner. We are literally chained or tied to the bed post, unable to breathe, waiting with bated breath for the next moment in Blood Dark that will bring us pleasure so painful that we don’t know whether to laugh or cry, believe or ignore, trust or run from. Just like the characters in this narrative we are torn, confused and questioning when all we want is to believe it will all turn out fine in the end.
The author is a master at generating tension but I have news for her... I can wait for more. BUT I do need to know more is coming and, with any luck, if it’s as good as the fifth book in the series then, as someone totally dedicated to the idea that connection is what cements a writer as a writer then I am a very lucky reader.
