I was interested to read about the semester at sea program, but what I really read was a more adult coming of age, as this delightful young woman shared her 100 plus days on an adventure. This blog turned book is a true gift to her family, friends and shipmates, but as someone who was none of those things, it was a slightly addictive read each evening as she moved through so many countries, cultures and personal experiences.
Oates has a distinct voice, one that is genuine and unashamed of delivering on her story. The semester at sea program delivers so many thing, but as the author gently then deliberately acknowledges, it most importantly provides an opportunity for for the participants to become citizens of the world, and an awareness of what each of them can contribute. Their journey as 500 plus strangers who become a family made me genuinely sorry to see this story end.
