The Legion Eagles of the Empire 10 Cato Macro Book 10 eBook Simon Scarrow
I have been our two Heroes through 10 books. Most of what he has done is really good. He went Hollywood on me in this one. He created a really tortured relationship between our heroes and their arch-villain. The behaviors on both sides were tortured and implausible. The whole hostage situations were unlikely distorted and as I said implausible. There wasn't as much history in this one but instead a contrived and distorted relationship between opposing adversaries who hated each other and their emotions Clouded their judgment. This was something that would not occur in ancient Rome. This story line wouldn't happen because the first one to get caught would get dead. All of the back and forth was really weak.Product details

The Legion Eagles of the Empire 10 Cato Macro Book 10 eBook Simon Scarrow Reviews
Simon Scarrow is great at what he does and that's all that can be said. If your going to read this then make sure you get the full picture and story by starting with the first book of the series. Is a long series but he never duplicates plots even though he uses the same characters and basically same place and time. Well worth a read.
Continues macro and cato 's story on the island of crete where they come up against an old foe nicknamed the gladiator. One very poignant moment in this book where cato finds a crying crippled toddler n the ruins of a collapsed building and then leaves the child behind presumably to die of dehydration or starvation... rather cowardly for the main hero of the book I thought! Also most readers will have a lot of sympathy for the gladiator who is essentially trying to emulate spartacus and free the oppressed against overwhelming odds. Good book though.
I've been following this series and I'm getting tired of Macro and Cato's endless diversions caused by Narcissis. Could we get them back to clobbering the Gauls,Partians, or Britains? ie this spy thing is worn out. And the romantic angle, long delayed, is annoying. How long must Cato wait while Narcissis comes up with more intrigue. Nah. I want the story to move forward dynamically, with some big battles and a romantic interlude for Cato. Macro too, if he can let down his guard a bit. And of course, battles based on historic fact.
I have read all of the novels in this series and this was probably the best in sometime. I always felt like the ones based in Europe were the best but this one comes close.
It is the best, in my opinion, of the ones that have recently been set in the Middle East.
Lots of twists and turns in this one.
One thing I wish the author would reflect more is the continuing maturity level of Cato and the, no doubt, physical limitations besetting Macro now that he is such a seasoned veterean. I have read too many series inmy lifetime where the characters remain ageless, and/or have no physical or mental results that mount up over time from their hardships.
Book 10 in Cato and Macro's lives and it seems that we are not even half way through all that there needs to be said. We opened with Vespasian and the invasion of Britain. After meeting such an august individual back then, it would seem that we are destined to meet him again one day, and see his rise to the purple.
This is actually part of the arc began in book 9, The Gladiator. The villain there, Ajax, slipped away and now needs to be dealt with. Cato, still progressing in his development assumes even greater leadership now, and pursues the hunt efficiently, applying good sound tactics in battle, as well as surviving harrowing fights.
Macro as well, though he may begin to see the end of his progress up the ranks. It is clear that Macro, once the mentor, can only rise so far, but Cato can rise as far as ability can take a man.
Another great read in the series. Well worth investigating.
After success in the last book, and as this is a series, we do expect success by the end of the novel, it is time to make our way home to Rome and for the heroes to get their rewards. Macro and Cato have been stepping up and giving great needed service to Rome, and Claudius and they deserve accolades.
Instead an earthquake and tidal wave beset them as they are near Crete. It throws the Island into turmoil, seriously hammering the infrastructure and forcing our two Centurions to step up once more.
We see the continuing evolution of Cato as a leader and we also see that Macro, once the Master, now becoming the lieutenant. Something that we knew from book one was a possibility and long overdue.
What comes as an unexpected and pleasant addition is that we have an enemy who we had left behind long ago, emerge. One that gives us plausible cause to believe he is not only present at the recovering Crete, but his actions will and do impact the story.
In all, a very good book and nice to see Cato finally on his path instead of treading water. A definite reread when we have the entire series finished.
This Eagles of the Empire series by Simon Scarrow is the best series I've ever read. Every book has been hard to put down. The main characters of Macro and Cato really grow on you and it's exciting to follow them through their adventures. You learn a lot about Rome and the Roman Empire as well as it's military campaigns, strategies and weapons. Mr. Scarrow has done serious research in every region in which his stories are set so there's lots of historical accuracy. He will admit when he has taken literary license to "fill in the blanks" where there's missing information. I love this series!
